Chalamila pushes for faster completion of key Dar projects

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila on Wednesday toured major infrastructure projects in Ilala District, directing contractors to speed up construction works on the Kivule–Msongola road and the Gymkhana Stadium ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The projects form part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure in Tanzania’s commercial capital as the country prepares to co-host AFCON while expanding urban transport networks under the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP II).

Speaking during the inspection of the Kitunda–Msongola road, Chalamila assured residents that the government had already secured and released funds for the project, dismissing fears over possible delays linked to financing.

The road is being constructed to bitumen standard in some sections, while other areas are being upgraded using concrete technology to improve durability and withstand heavy traffic.

The regional commissioner warned contractors against continued delays, saying authorities would take action if the pace of implementation failed to improve.

“We expect these projects to be completed on time and according to the required standards because they are important to wananchi and the country’s development agenda,” he said.

At the Msongola junction area, Chalamila said President Samia Suluhu Hassan had continued mobilising resources for strategic development projects nationwide, including roads, schools and health facilities.

He urged citizens to support the government’s development efforts through tax compliance, noting that domestic revenue remains critical in financing large-scale infrastructure projects.

Acting TARURA Dar es Salaam Regional Manager, Engineer John Magori, said heavy rains had slowed progress after parts of the road were excavated during construction works.

Despite the setbacks, he said the project remains under close supervision and will be delivered within the agreed timeframe and standards.

Residents of Kitunda, however, raised concerns over prolonged construction delays and the absence of alternative routes, saying the situation had disrupted transport services and increased the cost of living for many households and businesses in the area.
