A political analyst, Michael Kiria, has urged Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) to use its Central Committee meeting today to critically assess its conduct and take corrective action on issues affecting the party’s image and national cohesion.
Speaking on Friday ahead of the meeting, Kiria said the party’s top leadership should prioritise internal discipline, including condemning acts of unrest allegedly involving some of its youth members, which he said have contributed to damaging the party’s reputation.
He said the meeting presents an opportunity for Chadema leaders to reflect and take responsibility over members accused of being linked to violent incidents that resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property during and after the General Election held on Tanzania General Election 2025.
Kiria cautioned against political statements that may heighten tensions among citizens, stressing that maintaining peace and stability is essential for both the public and political actors.
“Citizens have already experienced losses, injuries and destruction of property. There is a need for leaders to avoid statements that create fear and uncertainty,” he said, urging political actors to support national unity efforts.
He also called on the party to enhance transparency in the use of its financial resources, particularly funds contributed by supporters, noting that accountability would help build public trust.
At the same time, Kiria warned against dismissing findings of investigations into the post-election unrest, saying such reactions risk fuelling division and hostility.
He urged political parties to reflect on the findings and take appropriate steps, adding that public confidence depends on responsible leadership and constructive engagement.
Kiria further pointed to Chadema’s slogan “No reforms, no election” as among the issues raised in discussions surrounding the unrest, calling on the party to evaluate its messaging and its possible impact on peace and stability.
He emphasised that safeguarding national unity should remain a priority for all political actors as the country continues to strengthen its democratic processes.
