The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) continues to strengthen good governance, accountability, and institutional development in Tanzania, the government has said.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, said the mechanism has helped the country improve how public institutions operate and how leaders are held accountable in delivering services to citizens.
Ambassador Kombo made the remarks while presenting the Ministry’s budget estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year.
He said the government will continue to strengthen APRM implementation to ensure it delivers more practical benefits to citizens, including better service delivery and stronger public institutions.
He explained that APRM works as a self-assessment tool that helps Tanzania review its performance in key governance areas such as democracy, economic management, corporate governance, and social development.
Through this process, the country is able to identify strengths and address challenges in its governance systems.
According to him, the implementation of APRM recommendations has already contributed to improving transparency in government operations, strengthening accountability, and enhancing the efficiency of public institutions that serve citizens.
He added that the mechanism also promotes citizen participation by encouraging dialogue between government and different stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector, to ensure that development priorities reflect the needs of the people.
Ambassador Kombo said Tanzania has also benefited from sharing experiences with other African countries through APRM, which has helped improve policy-making and implementation in various sectors.
He stressed that in the 2026/2027 financial year, the government will focus on strengthening APRM structures at national and local levels so that more citizens can take part in governance processes and hold leaders accountable.
“The government will continue strengthening APRM to improve governance, increase public participation, and ensure that development efforts directly benefit citizens,” he said.
He noted that good governance remains essential for improving service delivery, attracting investment, and ensuring that national resources are used fairly and efficiently for the benefit of all Tanzanians.
Ambassador Kombo also said that ongoing reforms supported by APRM will help reduce bureaucracy in public service delivery and improve efficiency in government institutions.
He called on stakeholders, including civil society organizations, the private sector, and development partners, to continue supporting governance reforms to ensure they are effectively implemented.
He reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to the APRM framework as part of broader efforts to strengthen democracy, peace, and development across Africa.
The Minister said the government remains focused on building strong institutions that are transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of citizens, in order to promote inclusive and sustainable development.
