The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, has chaired a high-level Joint Committee meeting between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) on Union matters, held at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Zanzibar.
The meeting brought together senior leaders and technical experts from both sides of the Union to deliberate on key issues aimed at strengthening cooperation, improving coordination, and enhancing service delivery to citizens.
In his remarks, Vice President Dr. Nchimbi commended all leaders and experts for their dedication and teamwork during the preparations and discussions, noting that their commitment had contributed to smooth and productive deliberations.
A major outcome of the meeting was the resolution of the long-standing issue concerning the importation of sugar from Zanzibar into the Mainland market.
The matter was formally approved and removed from the list of Union issues following consensus between the two governments.
The decision was sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), officially closing the matter, which was among the remaining four Union-related issues.
The development marks a significant step in addressing outstanding Union matters through dialogue and mutual understanding, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation between the two sides.
The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Eng. Hamad Masauni, and the Minister of State in the Second Vice President’s Office (Policy, Coordination and House of Representatives), Hamza Hassan Juma.
Also present were Ministers and Deputy Ministers from both the URT and SMZ, the Chief Secretary of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Dr. Moses Kusiluka, the Acting Chief Secretary of Zanzibar, Mr. Saleh Juma Mussa, as well as Permanent Secretaries, heads of institutions, and technical experts.
The meeting underscores continued efforts by both governments to strengthen Union stability through consultation, consensus-building, and practical solutions that prioritize national unity and the welfare of citizens across Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
