U.S. President Donald Trump was safely evacuated after gunfire erupted near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, in a major security incident that caused panic among attendees.
According to white house, a gunman armed with a shotgun attempted to breach security at the venue, the Washington Hilton, late Saturday. The suspect fired at least one shot and was quickly subdued and taken into custody by security agents.
Major media reports that no senior government officials or journalists were injured in the incident.
One Secret Service agent was reportedly targeted but escaped harm due to protective gear.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion as hundreds of guests including top U.S. officials, diplomats, and media figures were forced to take cover while security personnel rushed to secure the area.
Washington reports that the suspect acted alone and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack.
President Trump later confirmed that all key officials, including members of his Cabinet, were safe and praised law enforcement for their swift response.
The high-profile annual event was subsequently canceled and is expected to be rescheduled.
The incident has renewed concerns over political violence and security at major public events in the United States, drawing condemnation from world leaders and calls for calm.
