Arusha. The government has credited increased financial allocations to local government authorities for accelerating development projects and improving delivery of social services across the country.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, said the decision by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to channel more funds to councils has had a visible impact on citizens’ welfare.

Speaking on April 22, 2026, in Arusha ahead of the opening of the Association of Local Authorities of Tanzania (ALAT) Special General Meeting, Prof. Shemdoe said the funding has enabled the implementation of strategic projects that directly benefit communities.

“Let me take this opportunity to sincerely thank the President for approving substantial funds to local government authorities, which have facilitated the implementation of key development projects and improved social service delivery,” he said.

He also acknowledged the role of the Prime Minister, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, noting that his previous position as Minister for Finance was instrumental in ensuring the availability of the approved funds.

“I also thank you, Honourable Prime Minister, for your role in ensuring the availability of these funds when you served as Minister for Finance,” Prof. Shemdoe added.

The minister said the increased funding has strengthened councils’ capacity to implement projects in sectors such as health, education and infrastructure, contributing to what he described as “a lasting smile” among citizens.

The remarks were made shortly before Prof. Shemdoe invited the Prime Minister to officially open the ALAT Special General Meeting, which is being held in Arusha from April 22 to 23, 2026, bringing together local government leaders from across the country.

In his address, Prof. Shemdoe also called on mayors and council chairpersons to uphold the trust placed in them by residents, urging them to demonstrate professionalism, integrity and diligence in serving the public.

“You have been entrusted with leadership by your respective councils. It is your responsibility to safeguard that trust through hard work, professionalism and integrity,” he said.

He further commended council executive directors for their role in overseeing project implementation and managing human resources, noting that their efforts have been critical in translating national priorities into tangible results at the grassroots level.

Sustained fiscal decentralisation, coupled with strong oversight, will be essential in ensuring that increased funding continues to deliver measurable improvements in service delivery and local development outcomes.
