Pwani sets sights on hosting successful National Athletics Championships

The Pwani Regional Athletics Association has stepped up preparations for the National Athletics Championships slated for May 20 at the Filbert Bayi Secondary School Grounds, as the region positions itself to deliver a high-standard competition.

The event is being organised in partnership with the Tanzania Athletics Federation as part of this season’s national athletics programme.

Speaking to The Respondent Online, the association’s Secretary General, Elias Hotay, said preparations are at an advanced stage, with major improvements to the competition venue nearing completion.

He said parallel arrangements are being made to accommodate visiting teams, while some essential equipment is expected to be delivered by the national federation in the coming days.

Hotay stressed that the region’s priority is to host a well-organised, competitive and professionally managed championship that reflects the growing standards of athletics in the country.

“We have been holding a series of preparatory meetings with key stakeholders, and we are planning to meet the Regional Commissioner to secure final support. Overall, we are on track and ready to welcome teams,” he said.

At the same time, the association has intensified efforts to assemble a strong regional team that will compete against top contenders from across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

According to Hotay, selection of athletes will begin with trials scheduled for April, bringing together talent from all districts within the region.

“We already have a number of athletes training at Filbert Bayi grounds, but the trials will give equal opportunity to others across the region so we can form a solid and competitive team,” he explained.

With teams expected from regions such as Zanzibar, Manyara and Arusha, Pwani is aiming to make a strong statement on home soil by challenging for top honours in what is expected to be a highly competitive championship.
