The Ministry of Works has introduced new and stronger measures aimed at improving the performance of the national weighbridge system, with a focus on enhancing road safety, increasing efficiency, and protecting road infrastructure from damage caused by overloaded vehicles.

The reforms were discussed during a high-level review meeting that brought together officials from the Ministry of Works and the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS).

The meeting evaluated the current performance of weighbridge operations and identified key areas that require improvement to ensure better service delivery across the country.

Speaking after the meeting, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Dr. Charles Msonde, said the government is committed to modernizing weighbridge operations through the use of advanced digital systems and improved transparency mechanisms.

He said the reforms are designed to ensure that weighbridges operate more efficiently while reducing delays for transporters and improving compliance with road regulations.

Dr. Msonde added that the government will invest in digital technologies to replace or upgrade existing systems, making it easier to monitor vehicle weights in real time.

He further noted that strengthening human resource capacity will be a key priority, including training staff to improve professionalism, accountability, and service delivery.

“We are focused on ensuring that weighbridge operations are efficient, transparent, and fair. This will help protect our roads from unnecessary damage caused by overloaded vehicles,” said Dr. Msonde.

He also emphasized the importance of cooperation between government institutions responsible for transport regulation.

According to him, effective collaboration will ensure that laws and regulations on vehicle load limits are enforced consistently and without compromise.

Dr. Msonde further said that controlling overloading is essential for safeguarding the country’s road infrastructure, reducing maintenance costs, and improving safety for all road users.

He stressed that the government’s broader goal is to support a reliable and efficient transport system that benefits citizens and businesses alike.

On the side of TANROADS, Weighbridge Manager Engineer Musa George assured the Ministry that all directives given will be implemented fully.

He said TANROADS is committed to improving operational efficiency, strengthening integrity, and ensuring strict adherence to rules and procedures at all weighbridge stations across the country.

He added that continuous efforts are being made to improve discipline among staff and ensure that services are delivered in a professional and accountable manner.

The government believes that these reforms will significantly transform weighbridge operations, improve road protection efforts, and contribute to a safer and more efficient transport sector that directly benefits citizens and the national economy.
