The Mayor of Dar es Salaam, Nurdin Bilal Ali, has recalled years of deadly flooding in the Msimbazi Valley, describing how recurring disasters displaced families and destroyed property, as authorities move ahead with a major redevelopment project.

Speaking at an event marking progress on the project yesterday, Nurdin Bilal Ali (Shetta) said his personal experience growing up and living in the area shaped his understanding of the challenges faced by residents.

“We have witnessed people losing their lives, homes submerged, and families losing property. For many, this became a normal reality,” he said.

The Msimbazi project, which began in 2023, aims to control flooding by widening and deepening the river, expanding floodplains, and improving land use.

Authorities say the project will also create 57 hectares of safe land for housing and business, while complementary infrastructure including local road upgrades will improve mobility and support economic activity.

Shetta said local government leaders are united in supporting the initiative, pledging cooperation to ensure its success and long-term impact.

Residents in affected areas have welcomed the project, expressing hope that it will address longstanding challenges linked to flooding, poor infrastructure, and economic vulnerability.

Officials say the redevelopment will not only reduce flood risks but also transform the area into a modern urban space, creating new opportunities for business, investment, and improved living standards in Tanzania’s largest city.
