Ministry of Energy to lead efficient energy use at Mtumba Government City

The Ministry of Energy, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is set to implement a groundbreaking project on efficient energy use, beginning with the Ministry’s headquarters and eventually expanding to the entire Mtumba Government City.

Speaking at a meeting on April 1, 2026, to discuss project implementation with UNDP Project Manager Aaron Cunningham, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, said the initiative aims to make the Ministry building a model for energy efficiency.

“The project will start with our building because we oversee the energy sector and can set an example for other government and private institutions. We will install small-scale solar and wind power systems, along with energy-efficient infrastructure, to ensure reliable and clean electricity,” Engineer Luoga explained.

He added that the project will also introduce electric vehicle charging stations in parking areas, promoting sustainable transport within the government city.

“This initiative will help reduce electricity costs and ensure consistent power supply, not only here but eventually across Mtumba Government City,” he said.

UNDP Project Manager Aaron Cunningham expressed readiness to support the project. “UNDP has partnered with the Ministry of Energy on several initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to communities and the nation. We are excited to collaborate on this project, which will enhance energy efficiency and sustainability in government operations,” he said.

The initiative is expected to significantly cut electricity costs in public institutions while promoting clean energy adoption.

This project builds on previous collaborations, including the Energy Efficiency Project, whose 10-year strategy was launched in December 2024.

By starting with its own building, the Ministry of Energy aims to demonstrate that sustainable energy use is practical, cost-effective, and scalable, setting a benchmark for other government agencies and private organizations.
