The fifth season of the Great Ruaha Marathon (GRUMA) has been officially launched in Iringa Region, marking the beginning of preparations for one of Tanzania’s growing sports tourism events that combines athletics, tourism, and conservation.

The launch was officiated on April 28, 2026, by Iringa Regional Commissioner Kheri James during a press briefing that brought together stakeholders from tourism, sports, and wildlife conservation sectors. The event sets the stage for the marathon scheduled to take place on July 4, 2026, inside Ruaha National Park.

Speaking at the launch, Commissioner James said the marathon continues to position Tanzania as a competitive destination for sports tourism while promoting the country’s natural attractions and conservation efforts.

“Events like this are important because they promote tourism, bring communities together, and showcase the beauty of our national parks,” he said.

The Great Ruaha Marathon is not just a running competition. It is designed as an integrated tourism experience that connects sports with nature and adventure activities.

According to organizers, the experience will begin a day earlier on July 3, 2026, with a series of outdoor activities inside Ruaha National Park. These will include walking safaris, sport fishing, and cycling routes designed to allow participants and visitors to explore the park’s unique landscapes.

The main marathon events will take place on July 4, 2026, featuring races of 5KM, 10KM, and 21KM. All races will be conducted within the natural environment of Ruaha National Park, offering runners a rare opportunity to compete while surrounded by wildlife and scenic landscapes.

Organizers said the event is aimed at promoting eco-tourism and encouraging both local and international participants to experience Tanzania’s protected areas in a responsible and engaging way.

The marathon is also expected to generate economic opportunities for surrounding communities through tourism-related activities such as transport services, accommodation, food vending, and other small businesses.

Stakeholders from the tourism and conservation sectors expressed optimism that GRUMA Season 5 will attract more participants compared to previous editions, strengthening its role as a key sports tourism platform in the country.

They further emphasized that the event supports national efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, environmental conservation, and community participation in tourism development.

With its blend of athletics, adventure, and nature experience, the Great Ruaha Marathon continues to grow as a signature event that showcases Tanzania’s potential in combining sports with sustainable tourism inside one of its most important national parks.
