Tanzania, Palestine officials pledge solidarity amid religious rights crisis

In a demonstration of faith, conscience, and moral responsibility, Salam Abu Sharar, Ambassador-designate of the State of Palestine to the United Republic of Tanzania, met in Dar es Salaam with Sheikh Alhad Mussa Salim, Chairman of the Tanzania Peace and Reconciliation Organization (JMAT).

The meeting underscored a united commitment to justice, human dignity, and the protection of the sacred rights of the Palestinian people.

Discussions centered on the escalating political and humanitarian crisis in Palestine and the discriminatory policies of Israeli occupation forces.

Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for international solidarity and decisive measures to protect freedom of worship and safeguard holy sites from closures.

Sheikh Alhad Mussa Salim reaffirmed his long-standing, unwavering support for the Palestinian people, stressing that his position remains firm, principled, and unshakable.

H.E. Abu Sharar delivered an official letter from Dr. Ramzi Khoury, Chairman of the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine.

The letter referenced a Joint Press Release issued in Jerusalem on March 29, 2026 (Palm Sunday), condemning Israeli occupation forces for barring senior Catholic leaders including Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Fr. Francesco Ielpo from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to lead Palm Sunday Mass. The act was described as an unprecedented violation of religious freedom.

The statement also highlighted the closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque for 31 consecutive days, calling it a dangerous escalation with serious spiritual, humanitarian, and political consequences.

Abu Sharar warned that the closures reflect a broader plan targeting the mosque, citing statements by Israeli political leaders outlining such intentions.

He stressed that silence is no longer acceptable, urging collective action to defend justice, peace, and the dignity of all faiths against discriminatory policies.

Both sides agreed to continue engaging in dialogue, coordinate efforts, and raise awareness about the ongoing human rights violations and religious restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation, both in Palestine and globally.
