The Tanzanian government has stepped up efforts to combat drug-resistant pathogens, urging all ministries and institutions to fast-track the implementation of a joint strategic plan under the One Health Approach.

The announcement came today, March 31, 2026, during the 32nd National Coordination Committee Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Dar es Salaam, which brought together key government ministries working to safeguard public health.

Dr. Grace Magembe, Chairperson of the meeting and Chief Government Medical Officer, said members reviewed reports from five technical committees covering public awareness, laboratory surveillance, infection prevention and control, rational use of medicines, and monitoring and evaluation.

She stressed that each ministry and institution should allocate dedicated budgets for AMR control, strengthen public education, and ensure national strategies are implemented effectively to protect communities.

Mr. Daudi Msasi, Secretary of the meeting and Chief Government Pharmacist, warned that drug-resistant pathogens remain a growing global threat. He urged Tanzania to take proactive measures to limit their impact.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of educating communities and improving medicine management to prevent misuse, a major driver of resistance. Members agreed to continue close collaboration to ensure recommendations are implemented on time, safeguarding public health and reinforcing the national healthcare system.
