Nkasi District moves closer to full electrification

By Respondents Reporter

Nkasi District in Rukwa Region is steadily advancing towards full electrification, with 89 percent of its 724 villages already connected to electricity, Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, has revealed.

The remaining villages are expected to receive power by 2030, ensuring the district’s complete access to reliable energy.

Makamba made the announcement in Namanyere Town during a visit by Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba.

He said the Energy Ministry is committed to providing all Tanzanians with reliable electricity at all times.

“Currently, Nkasi relies on electricity imported from Zambia under regional agreements to ensure a stable supply. If all goes according to plan, the district will be connected to the national grid by May this year, providing residents with direct access to reliable electricity,” he explained.

He further noted that the ongoing Rukwa grid expansion project is progressing smoothly. Once complete, residents will not only enjoy a dependable electricity supply but will also have the potential to access additional power from Zambia.

The Sumbawanga power station is expected to play a key role in regional electricity trade, benefiting neighboring countries including Zambia.

During his engagement with Namanyere residents, Makamba urged communities to abandon the use of unclean energy sources such as firewood and charcoal and to embrace cleaner alternatives for cooking.

He highlighted the government’s commitment under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, including subsidies of up to 85 percent for improved cookstoves and 50 percent for six-kilogram gas cylinders, aimed at promoting cleaner energy use nationwide.

With the district moving closer to full electrification, Nkasi residents are set to gain access to modern energy services that will support economic activities, improve household living standards, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
