Livestock and fisheries extension officers from Tanzania’s Lake Zone have kicked off a refresher training program in Chato District, Geita Region, aimed at enhancing advisory services for livestock farmers and fishers.
The program, organized by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, began on March 9, 2026, and brings together officers from regional, district, ward, village, and street levels.
Speaking at the opening, Chato District Commissioner Mr. Lois Bura urged extension officers to exchange experiences and apply their professional skills to improve the quality of services offered to citizens.
He emphasized the crucial role officers play in guiding farmers and fishers who rely on their expertise for production and livelihoods.
“Extension officers are key in delivering government policies, regulations, and modern practices in livestock and fisheries. Their work enhances productivity, strengthens food security, and boosts incomes for citizens,” said Mr. Bura.
He also highlighted the transformative role of extension services in introducing new technologies and approaches, while helping farmers and fishers adapt to challenges, including climate change.
On behalf of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Joshua Elisha said the training is part of ongoing efforts to build the capacity of livestock and fisheries officers.
He noted that the program provides an opportunity to learn about livestock production, disease management, and sustainable fisheries resource management.
“The training allows officers from different levels to come together, share knowledge, discuss challenges, and develop effective strategies to enhance service delivery nationwide,” said Mr. Elisha.
The initiative is expected to improve the quality of advisory services, strengthen production practices, and support the livelihoods of farmers and fishers across the country.
