Tanzania’s Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Zuberi Homera, is expected to lead the commemoration of the International Day of Women Judges today in Dodoma, in an event organized by the Tanzania Women Judges Association (TAWJA).
The global day, observed annually on March 10, was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through Resolution 75/274 adopted in April 2021.
The day aims to recognize the critical role played by women judges in judicial systems worldwide and to promote gender equality within the judiciary.
This year’s national commemoration is taking place at New Generation Hall, bringing together members of TAWJA who include women judges and magistrates from various regions of Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
The event is also expected to attract stakeholders from both local and international institutions, including UN Women, the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs Tanzania, the Attorney General’s Chambers Tanzania, the National Prosecutions Service Tanzania, as well as the Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) and various civil society organizations.
According to the organizers, the celebration seeks to highlight the important contribution of women judges in strengthening the rule of law and ensuring equal access to justice for all.
Globally, this year’s theme is “Women Judges Within and Beyond the Judiciary: Ensuring Equal Access to Justice.”
For TAWJA, the commemoration is guided by the theme “From Court-room to Community: Women Judges Championing Protection Against Gender-Based Violence.”
The theme emphasizes the role of women judges not only within courtrooms but also in broader society in promoting justice and combating gender-based violence.
Through the event, TAWJA hopes to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and continue raising awareness on the protection of rights and the fight against gender-based violence, while advancing gender equality within the justice system.
