Government launches specialized poultry production technology training to boost sector

The Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, has taken a major step to strengthen the poultry industry by launching a specialized training program in poultry production technology.

The program, designed to meet growing demand from industry stakeholders, aims to produce skilled professionals capable of transforming the sector and supporting national economic growth.

The initiative began with the development of a dedicated curriculum, which was recently reviewed and improved during a stakeholder workshop in Dar es Salaam on March 23, 2026.

The program will offer diploma and advanced diploma courses, equipping students with practical skills and knowledge to thrive in the poultry industry.

Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Damas Kamani, said existing poultry training had been limited, reaching only a small portion of aspiring farmers and professionals.

“Through LITA, in partnership with stakeholders in the livestock and fisheries sector, we have revised and upgraded training curricula, which are key to producing the experts our country needs. This new curriculum will guide the training of professionals who can provide quality services to communities while giving students the knowledge, confidence, and practical experience demanded in today’s job market,” he said.

Hon. Kamani emphasized that extensive consultations were held with small-scale poultry farmers and private-sector stakeholders to ensure the curriculum addresses real industry needs.

“The active involvement of private-sector players was critical to designing a program that truly meets the requirements of the market,” he added.

The new training program is expected to start in the next academic year. Kamani expressed confidence that the updated curriculum would significantly boost productivity in the poultry sector, improve farmers’ incomes, create new jobs, and enhance the contribution of youth and women to the industry.

Acknowledging the challenges facing the poultry sector, the Deputy Minister highlighted government measures to support growth.

These include establishing a dedicated poultry desk within the Ministry, improving the Kibaha vaccination center in Pwani to produce vaccines against major poultry diseases, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the quality of feed through the Tanzania Veterinary Laboratory Agency (TVLA) in Temeke.

Deputy Secretary of the Ministry (Livestock), Dr. Fabian Madele, said the success of the new program will rely heavily on adequate teaching infrastructure and resources, which will require strong collaboration between the Ministry, LITA, and industry stakeholders.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, which is committed to transforming the livestock sector, including poultry.

On behalf of the Director of Research, Training, and Extension, Ms. Emelda Adam, Assistant Director of Livestock Research and Training, praised LITA for mobilizing key stakeholders to ensure the curriculum is practical, relevant, and beneficial for poultry farmers across the country.

LITA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Pius Lazaro Mwambene, said the poultry production technology curriculum had been carefully designed with input from stakeholders to maximize its impact.

“The program goes beyond traditional poultry farming techniques. It incorporates modern production technologies to improve efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in the sector,” he said.

With the launch of this program, Tanzania aims to build a new generation of poultry experts who can drive innovation, enhance food security, and support the growth of small and large-scale poultry farming.

The initiative is also expected to create more employment opportunities for youth and women, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive economic development.
