The Government has set aside TZS 6 billion to protect six million children under 10 years old from polio in seven regions: Mwanza, Shinyanga, Simiyu, Geita, Tabora, Singida, and Mara.

The funding will support a nationwide oral polio vaccination campaign running from March 24 to 27, 2026.

Regional Commissioner of Geita, Mhe. Martin Shigela, speaking on behalf of Mwanza’s Regional Commissioner and representing the Minister of Health, Mhe. Mohamed Mchengerwa, launched the campaign in Mwanza today.

“We are grateful to President Dkt. Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing this initiative. Tanzania has been polio-free for more than 30 years, but the disease remains a threat in neighboring countries. This campaign ensures our children develop immunity and are protected from this debilitating disease,” Mhe. Shigela said.

He urged parents and guardians to fully cooperate with vaccination teams, stressing that early participation is crucial.

“We appeal to all leaders to encourage families to bring their children to the vaccination sites without delay. Waiting until the last day often reduces coverage,” he added.

Chief Government Medical Officer, Dkt. Grace Magembe, said 14,000 vaccination teams will provide oral polio drops across the seven regions.

Vaccines will be administered at health facilities including dispensaries, health centers, and hospitals, as well as at community points such as churches, mosques, markets, bus stands, and other public gathering sites.

Dkt. Magembe reassured the public that the polio vaccine is safe and poses no physical or mental risks.

“Vaccination is a proven preventive measure. Any child can contract and spread polio, and vaccines are the most effective way to stop its transmission,” she emphasized.

The Government’s investment highlights its continued commitment to safeguarding the health of Tanzanian children and preventing the resurgence of polio in the country.
