The Tech and Media Convergency (TMC) has been widely praised for its leadership and vision in shaping Tanzania’s digital landscape, following the launch of the highly anticipated Tanzania Internet Governance Series 2025 Report.

The event highlighted the organization’s pivotal role in promoting technological advancement while safeguarding civic space and digital rights.

The report paints a “dual digital reality” rapid expansion of connectivity and digital services alongside challenges in maintaining an open civic digital space.

Speaking at the launch held today, Bi: Asha Abinala, CEO of TMC, emphasized the organization’s commitment to balancing growth and citizen empowerment:

"This report teaches us that technological advancement is very important, but we must ensure that digital rights and civic participation are not compromised. It presents both challenges and opportunities for Tanzania in achieving sustainable digital development."

Mr Robert Sylvester, Policy & Civic Tech Lead at TMC, also underscored TMC’s role in shaping inclusive digital policies.

"We need to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure digital policies protect citizens while increasing civic engagement. These digital governance measures are crucial to ensure that technological progress does not close off digital opportunities for the people."

International Recognition and Domestic Achievements.

TMC’s efforts have helped Tanzania win three prestigious international ICT awards at the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva in July 2025, for achievements in e-Health, e-Government, and e-Science.

The country also successfully hosted the Africa Internet Governance Forum, establishing itself as a leading hub for digital policy dialogue across Africa a milestone made possible through TMC’s strategic vision and coordination.

Domestically, TMC’s guidance contributed to the first National ICT Awards, which recognized innovation and digital entrepreneurship nationwide. The organization also supported the development of ethical and secure Artificial Intelligence guidelines, aligning with Tanzania Development Vision 2050.

Zanzibar also made digital strides, expanding fiber networks, establishing 11 district ICT Centres, strengthening e-Government systems, and advancing a Tier III National Data Centre, initiatives strongly supported and advised by TMC.

While Tanzania faced 173 digital governance incidents in 2025, TMC has been at the forefront of monitoring, reporting, and advocating for citizen rights.

The organization highlighted regressive actions such as the five day nationwide internet shutdown during the General Elections and restricted access to X social media platform, calling for solutions that balance security with civic freedom.

The arrest and trial of CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu, initially broadcast to over 674,000 viewers, illustrated the tensions between judicial transparency and political sensitivity yet TMC continued to advocate for open, accountable digital engagement.

The organization also monitored gender based online harassment, documenting 3,644 negative mentions targeting a female presidential candidate, reaching an estimated 59.4 million users.

Through the launch of the 2025 Internet Governance Report, TMC has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to building a digital Tanzania that is both innovative and inclusive, showing that visionary leadership can turn complex challenges into opportunities for national progress.
