Electricity access is said to accelerate economic growth and industrial development in Tanzania’s central Singida region.
Geofrey Mdama, Mayor of Singida Municipality, made the remarks while opening a working session between the state power utility, Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO), and local government leaders, including ward executives, street chairpersons and councillors.
Mdama said reliable electricity had significantly contributed to expanding economic opportunities, strengthening industrial activity and attracting investment to the region.
He praised TANESCO for engaging grassroots leaders, describing them as crucial in educating residents about electricity services and the benefits of power access in social and economic development.
“Through these leaders, it is easier to reach the community,” Mdama said, also thanking President Samia Suluhu Hassan for allocating funds to implement electricity projects that have contributed to national development.
Boniface Shitindi, TANESCO’s Acting Regional Manager for Singida, said the meeting aimed to equip local leaders with knowledge about the utility’s operations so they could better inform citizens through community meetings.
Participants seemed satisfied with the session, particularly after receiving clarification on electricity connection costs, the use of prepaid smart meters, the importance of protecting power infrastructure, and the adoption of cleaner electric cooking energy.
TANESCO said the meeting was part of ongoing efforts to keep citizens informed about progress in electricity projects, service improvements and the safe and efficient use of power.
