Tanzania and Cuba have reaffirmed their long-standing diplomatic relations, pledging to further strengthen bilateral cooperation rooted in a shared history of solidarity, equality and mutual development.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Ngwaru J. Maghembe (MP), held talks with the Cuban Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Yordenis Despaigne Vera, at the ministry’s sub-offices in Dar es Salaam on February 10, 2026.
The discussions focused on ways to enhance diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels, in line with the interests of the two countries.
Tanzania and Cuba formally established diplomatic relations in 1962 and have since maintained close and cordial ties spanning more than six decades.
Dr Maghembe said the relationship between the two nations was founded during the liberation struggles, shaped by the vision and leadership of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and the late Fidel Castro of Cuba.
“Tanzania and Cuba share a historic and brotherly relationship built on mutual respect, equality and a common commitment to development. The government values this friendship and is keen to further strengthen cooperation in areas of shared interest,” said Dr Maghembe.
He noted that continued dialogue remains important in identifying new opportunities for collaboration while consolidating existing areas of partnership.
Ambassador Vera reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to sustaining and deepening its cooperation with Tanzania, describing the bilateral relationship as strong, resilient and guided by long-standing principles of solidarity.
“Our countries have enjoyed a unique friendship for decades. Cuba remains committed to working closely with Tanzania to advance our shared priorities and to cooperate at regional and international forums,” he said.
The meeting reflects Tanzania’s broader economic and diplomatic engagement strategy, which seeks to leverage long-standing partnerships to support national development goals and promote South–South cooperation.
Tanzania and Cuba continue to work together through diplomatic channels, building on a relationship that has endured since 1962 and remains anchored in shared values and mutual respect.
