Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has launched a quarterly sports festival for its employees in a move aimed at strengthening workplace productivity, teamwork and employee well-being.

The initiative, dubbed the Geita Sports Club Bonanza, was officially unveiled recently at the Nyankumbu Girls’ Secondary School grounds in Geita, bringing together GGML employees, contractors and stakeholders from within and outside Geita Municipality.

Speaking at the launch, GGML Acting Human Resources Director Mr Dominick Marandu said the company had introduced the sports festival as a long-term programme to promote healthy lifestyles and improve relations at the workplace.

“Sports are vital for both physical and mental health. Our objective is not competition, but to enhance health, unity and cooperation among employees. This is why we have decided to institutionalise the bonanza and hold it every three months,” Mr Marandu said.

He added that the initiative also seeks to strengthen relations between GGML, its contractors and other institutions, while creating a friendly environment that supports efficiency and improved performance.

According to Mr Marandu, the company believes that a healthy and well-connected workforce is key to achieving sustainable results and maintaining high standards of performance in the mining sector.

GGML Sports Club chairperson Mr Valence Ibrahimu said the bonanza was introduced following joint resolutions by employees and management, with the expectation that it would contribute positively to the organisation’s overall performance.

He said the sports festival will be held four times a year, bringing together employees from different departments to promote teamwork and physical and mental wellness.

“Every quarter we will organise one event. For the first edition, we have involved employees from various contractors operating at GGML, as well as participants from Geita Municipality,” Mr Ibrahimu said.

GGML Sports Club Assistant Secretary Ms Irene Mfwele said the inaugural event featured a range of sporting activities, including long- and short-distance races, football, netball and basketball.

She noted that the festival has created a platform for interaction among employees who may not regularly meet due to the size and nature of the company’s operations.

“GGML has a large workforce, and it is not always easy for staff to interact across departments. This bonanza has brought us together, helping to strengthen relationships, share ideas and build friendships,” Ms Mfwele said.

GGML said the Geita Sports Club Bonanza will remain a key platform for promoting unity, healthy living and improved performance across the company.
