The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has been appointed to host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Joint Procurement Program for Medicines and Medical Supplies (SPPS), a move that recognizes Tanzania’s stable governance, strong diplomatic relations, and trusted leadership within the region.
Speaking on February 24, 2026, at the SADC Ministers of Health and Ministers responsible for HIV Affairs meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Florence Samizi, said the selection reflects confidence in Tanzania’s ability to efficiently coordinate the regional program.
Dr. Samizi noted that hosting SPPS aligns with the strengthened role of the Medical Stores Department (MSD) as the central institution for procurement, storage, and distribution of medicines both domestically and across the SADC region.
The initiative aims to ensure reliable access to essential medical products while reducing costs through joint regional purchasing.
“This step will allow prices for medicines and medical supplies to decrease through pooled procurement and will streamline the distribution chain for all SADC member states,” Dr. Samizi said.
She added that the program will enhance MSD’s institutional capacity, expand regional services, and increase the use of Tanzania’s ports and infrastructure as a gateway for health products to the SADC region. The initiative is expected to generate employment, boost trade, and increase national revenue.
Local manufacturers are also set to benefit, as SPPS will provide access to a wider regional market, encourage the growth of domestic industries, and improve the competitiveness of locally produced medical products.
On preparations, Dr. Samizi confirmed that Tanzania is ready to host the program, having established working offices and implementation systems designed by local experts to ensure digital, transparent, and efficient execution.
She emphasized that MSD’s extensive experience in managing medicine supply chains, its modern warehouse infrastructure, and advanced digital health product management systems were key factors in Tanzania being selected as the SPPS host.
The government will continue working closely with the SADC Secretariat and development partners to ensure the program’s success, benefiting Tanzania and the wider region.
