Register traditional medicine practitioners in Dar es Salaam to ensure legal services

By The Respondents Reporter

The Ministry of Health, through the Traditional Medicine Council, has launched a registration exercise for traditional medicine practitioners in Dar es Salaam Region, in collaboration with the Office of the Regional Medical Officer.

The exercise is taking place from 9 to 20 February 2026 at Mkunguni Street, Dar es Salaam, and is intended to ensure that all practitioners of traditional medicine are properly registered and authorized to provide services.

Speaking during the exercise, the Coordinator, Ms. Lucy Laurian, said the registration aims to ensure that traditional medicine services are offered in accordance with established laws, regulations, and professional standards.

She urged all traditional medicine practitioners to come forward and register in order to obtain official licenses.

Ms. Laurian emphasized that, under the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act, Chapter 244 of the Laws of Tanzania, it is illegal for anyone to provide traditional medicine services without being registered by the Council.

She further noted that the law empowers the Registrar and the Council to take legal action against individuals who fail to comply with registration requirements, including the imposition of fines or other legal measures.

The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed that this exercise is part of the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen, regulate, and formalize traditional medicine services across the country.

The initiative aims to protect citizens by ensuring that services provided are safe, reliable, and legally recognized.
