The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has left the country today for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), scheduled from 14 to 15 February 2026.

Ahead of the main summit, on 13 February, President Samia will attend the AU Heads of State meeting on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), hosted by the President of Kenya, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto. She will also join a state dinner hosted by the Ethiopian Prime Minister, His Excellency Abiy Ahmed Ali.

During the summit, President Samia will hold bilateral meetings with key leaders, including the Prime Minister of Eswatini, His Excellency Russell Mmiso Dlamini; the President of Comoros, His Excellency Azali Assoumani; the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed; and the President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah.

These discussions aim to strengthen political, economic, and development partnerships that benefit Tanzania and Africa as a whole.

The 2026 AU Summit will open under the theme: “Ensuring Sustainable Water Access and Safe Sanitation Services to Achieve Agenda 2063 Goals.”

This focus highlights Africa’s shared commitment to securing water resources, improving public health, and promoting sustainable development across the continent.

Tanzania is also concluding its term on the AU Peace and Security Council, having served from 2022 to 2026. During this period, the country played a vital role in promoting peace, stability, and security in Africa.

This year’s summit will officially announce the AU leadership for 2026. The Republic of Burundi is set to assume the AU Chairmanship, while Tanzania will serve as Second Vice-Chair, representing the Eastern Africa region.

This reflects recognition of Tanzania’s leadership and contribution to continental development.

In addition, President Samia has been proposed as the AU Champion on Maternal and Child Health, a role that highlights Tanzania’s commitment to improving healthcare services, family welfare, and human resource development across Africa.

Through her participation, Tanzania seeks to continue strengthening its influence in regional and international diplomacy, safeguarding national interests, and contributing to a peaceful, united, and economically resilient Africa.

The AU Heads of State and Government Summit is the Union’s highest decision-making body, responsible for adopting resolutions, declarations, and continental policies. The Chairpersonship rotates among African regions, ensuring equal leadership opportunities for all member states.
