Political parties urged to end conflicts for inclusive political participation

By Lilian Kasenene, Morogoro

Political parties in Tanzania have been urged to resolve internal conflicts and strengthen unity as a key step toward protecting citizens’ democratic rights and ensuring inclusive participation in governance, particularly for women, youth and persons with disabilities.

The call was made by the Chairperson of the Council of Political Parties, Juma Ali Khatibu, during a training programme for political party leaders held in Morogoro.

Khatibu said persistent internal disputes within political parties undermine democracy and deny citizens the opportunity to be fairly represented.

He stressed that reducing conflicts would help create a political environment where leadership opportunities are shared transparently and fairly, allowing all groups to contribute to national development.

He added that political parties play a vital role in safeguarding citizens’ interests by questioning government actions, providing constructive advice, and actively participating in nation-building processes.

Assistant Registrar of Political Parties, Sisty Nyahoza, emphasized the importance of gender equality in politics, noting that women must be given equal space to participate and lead.

She said genuine democracy can only be achieved when both women and men are involved in decision-making on an equal footing.

The training sessions focused on key issues affecting citizens, including proposed amendments to the Political Parties Act, the high cost of elections, gender policies, and the 2025 political regulations.

Speaking after the training, the Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Swaum Rashid, said the programme would help strengthen political stability, peace and mutual understanding among political actors, which is essential for the welfare and unity of citizens.
