The Dar es Salaam regional basketball fraternity has elected a new leadership team, with officials urging the incoming executives to prioritise reforms, unity and infrastructure development to strengthen the sport.

The election, held on Sunday at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Dar es Salaam, saw Shendu Hamisi Mwagala retain his position as Chairperson for another term.

Yusuph Sunge was elected Vice Chairperson, while Daniel Kapongo secured the post of Executive Secretary.

Other elected leaders include Julieth Julius as Director of Women’s Basketball, Miriam Kiwelo as Director of School Basketball, and Shaban Mohamed Shaban, who was elected Director of Technical Affairs and Competitions.

Addressing members after the election, Dar es Salaam Regional Sports Officer Adolph Halii called on the new leaders of the Dar es Salaam Basketball Association to initiate constitutional reforms in collaboration with clubs and key stakeholders to address existing shortcomings.

He underscored the need for the association to secure office space, even if rented at the initial stage, before working towards acquiring a permanent headquarters.

He also urged leaders to plan for ownership of a dedicated basketball court, noting that infrastructure development remains key to the growth of the sport.

“For all these plans to be realised, the constitution must first be reviewed and aligned with current realities. Some members may not be fully aware of its contents, so it is important that it is well circulated and properly understood,” Halii said.

He further advised outgoing leaders to remain supportive by offering guidance and cooperation to the new executive, stressing that collective effort is essential for the advancement of basketball in the region.

Meanwhile, BD Electoral Committee Chairperson Okare Emesu praised members for conducting a peaceful and orderly election.

“I congratulate those elected and urge them to work with commitment and unity. Those who were not successful should remain part of the process by offering ideas and constructive advice to help develop our sport,” he said.

In his acceptance remarks, Chairperson Mwagala thanked members for renewing their trust in him and pledged to work diligently to promote basketball across Dar es Salaam.

He emphasised unity, calling on members to put aside divisions that emerged during the election period and focus on working together for the sustainable development of the game.
