Government refutes claims of financial setback in Arusha Stadium project

By Victoria Godfrey

The Government has strongly refuted claims circulating in the media and on social platforms that it is facing financial challenges in the construction of the Arusha Stadium, affirming that the project is progressing smoothly and remains on track for completion in July this year.

The clarification was issued by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, following reports alleging that the Government had sought financial assistance from China to complete the stadium.

Msigwa explained that the reports stemmed from a misquotation of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, James Mallya, and stressed that there has been no financial shortfall affecting the project.

“I have seen the information circulating online, and the Deputy Minister was misunderstood. Preparations for AFCON 2027 are progressing well, and all related projects, including the Arusha Stadium, are advancing as planned. The Government has not stalled due to lack of funds,” said Msigwa.

He noted that construction of the stadium has reached 74 percent completion, with the contractor continuing major works, including roof installation, which is expected to give a clearer picture of the final structure.

Msigwa added that the contractor has been paid promptly and that the majority of construction materials have already been delivered to the site, with installation ongoing.

He further stated that upon completion, the stadium together with two auxiliary training grounds being developed under the same project will be fully operational and ready for use.

Msigwa emphasized that the Government will continue to collaborate with both local and international development partners in implementing national development projects, including those supported through the Government budget.

He also called on Tanzanians to prepare for upcoming international competitions, noting that such events offer substantial economic and social benefits to the country.
