Government steps up production of improved cattle semen

The government is ramping up efforts to boost the production of improved cattle semen as part of wider reforms to strengthen the livestock sector, improve animal breeds and increase the quality and quantity of meat and milk produced in the country.

The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, said the initiative is aimed at transforming livestock keeping from traditional practices to a more productive, commercially viable sector that contributes meaningfully to the national economy.

Dr Kakurwa made the remarks on February 10, 2026, in Dodoma while addressing ministry officials during a meeting to review progress at the National Artificial Insemination Centre (NAIC).

He said the government is intensifying the use of science and technology in livestock development, including the production of quality pasture, establishment of modern pasture farms and increased private sector participation in research and the production of improved livestock genetics.

“Our goal is to have a national livestock reference laboratory with adequate equipment and modern technology to detect, control and prevent livestock diseases,” Dr Kakurwa said, noting that disease management remains a critical challenge for livestock keepers.

The minister also urged livestock professionals to uphold professional ethics, saying integrity and accountability are key to providing credible advice to farmers and strengthening trust in government extension services.

Meanwhile, Acting NAIC Director Dr Dafay Bura said the centre has continued to improve livestock breeds through the production, preservation and distribution of improved semen using artificial insemination technology.

He said that during the 2025/26 financial year, NAIC produced and distributed 49,000 units of improved cattle semen to livestock keepers across the country.

Dr Bura added that the centre is also investing in human resource development by training livestock professionals and other stakeholders to ensure sustainability and long-term impact of ongoing sector reforms.
