The government has stepped up efforts to improve transport infrastructure after announcing the reconstruction of part of the Morogoro–Mikumi highway to a concrete standard, a move expected to benefit traders, transporters and residents along the busy TANZAM corridor.
Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, said the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) is in the final stages of securing a contractor who will rebuild a 600-metre stretch at the Mikumi weighbridge area using concrete technology.
The upgrade comes in response to heavy traffic from cargo trucks transporting goods along the TANZAM Highway, which connects Tanzania to neighboring countries.
Due to the constant movement of heavy vehicles, the section has experienced frequent damage, affecting smooth transport and increasing maintenance costs.
Speaking during an inspection of the site, Ulega said the concrete road will be more durable and able to withstand pressure from trucks, reducing breakdowns and ensuring smoother movement of goods and services.
The project will also include the construction of modern parking spaces for trucks and other vehicles. The parking area will operate on a fee-paying basis, creating government revenue while offering drivers a safe and organised place to park.
“We will improve the parking areas so that you can conduct business, and those who park their vehicles will pay fees. This will help increase government revenue and grow our national economy,” said Ulega.
He added that the initiative follows directives from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has instructed that all road projects must include street lighting to enable citizens to carry out business activities day and night.
Ulega noted that Mikumi is a 24-hour commercial hub due to its strategic location along the highway. With improved infrastructure and proper lighting, traders and transporters will have greater opportunities to expand their businesses and increase their incomes.
The reconstruction of the Morogoro–Mikumi stretch is expected to strengthen trade, enhance road safety and support economic growth for communities that depend on transport and roadside businesses for their livelihoods.
