The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has reaffirmed the central role played by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) in safeguarding the country’s natural heritage, describing the institution as critical to both national and global conservation efforts.

UNDP Resident Representative, Mr Shigeki Komatsubara, made the remarks during his visit to the TANAPA pavilion at the ongoing 12th Zanzibar International Trade Fair (ZITF) being held at the Dimani–Fumba grounds.

He said TANAPA remains a key partner in protecting the environment, wildlife and ecological assets found within Tanzania’s national parks.

“TANAPA is a very important institution in the conservation of natural resources in Tanzania, and this is something I will continue to emphasise in various forums,” Mr Komatsubara said, noting that UNDP has been working closely with the agency to promote environmental protection and sustainable conservation for the benefit of Tanzania and the global community.

The international fair, which started on December 29, 2025, is scheduled to end on January 16, 2026, bringing together public and private institutions to showcase trade, investment opportunities and development initiatives.

During the exhibition, the TANAPA pavilion has attracted a wide range of visitors, including senior leaders, who have been receiving education on conservation, investment opportunities and Tanzania’s rich tourism potential.

Visitors are also being encouraged to explore attractions located within the country’s national parks.

Among the leaders who toured the pavilion are South Unguja Regional Commissioner Hamida M. Khamis and Zanzibar Meteorological Authority Director Masoud M. Faki, who commended TANAPA’s efforts in promoting conservation awareness and sustainable tourism.
