Benjamin Mkapa Hospital expands Uterus Transplants and Reduces Foreign Referrals

By The Respondents Reporter

Benjamin Mkapa Hospital has significantly reduced the number of Tanzanians seeking specialised treatment abroad after expanding its super-specialised services, including uterus transplants.

The hospital’s Executive Director, Prof. Abel Makubi, said the government’s allocation of TZS3 billion has been crucial in enabling patients to access uterus transplant procedures locally.

Speaking on January 14, 2026, during a working session chaired by Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa in Dodoma, Prof. Makubi highlighted that the hospital has also strengthened services in kidney transplants, heart surgery, and other specialised care.

“Benjamin Mkapa Hospital has made great progress in offering advanced treatment for heart, kidney, and uterus conditions. This has reduced the need for patients to travel abroad for medical care,” Prof. Makubi said.

He added that providing these services locally has eased the financial burden on patients and their families, while saving government resources spent on foreign referrals.

Prof. Makubi called for additional support to meet growing patient demand, including the recruitment of 23 more health workers and more equipment for kidney and cancer treatment.

The government has continued to prioritise investment in national referral hospitals, aiming to improve access to advanced healthcare and strengthen the country’s medical capacity.
