Zanzibar President announces key board leadership changes

The President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has approved new appointments to lead several key government boards, signaling a strategic effort to strengthen governance and oversight in critical sectors.

According to a statement from the Office of the Executive Council of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ), the appointments are effective immediately.

Ndugu Makame Hasnuu Makame has been appointed Chairman of the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO), moving from his previous role as Chairman of the Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA)

In turn, Ndugu Sultan Said Suleiman assumes the role of Chairman at ZMA, having formerly chaired ZECO.

Dr. Abdulhamid Yahya Mzee has been reappointed as Chairman of the Zanzibar Petroleum Development Company (ZPDC)

Dr. Mzee, who also serves as Secretary of the Revolutionary Council and is a retired Chief Secretary of the SMZ, brings decades of experience to his role.

The notice was signed by Engineer Zena A. Said, Secretary of the Revolutionary Council and Chief Secretary, confirming the changes take immediate effect from December 30, 2025.

The reshuffle is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership in strategic sectors, including energy, maritime operations, and petroleum development, which are crucial for Zanzibar’s economic growth and service delivery.
