Prime Minister orders councils to stop seizing legal goods from small traders

Do not tamper with people’s livelihoods. Follow proper procedures instead of destroying their goods” – Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has issued a stern warning to all councils across the country over the seizure of legal goods belonging to small traders earning their livelihoods on the streets.

Speaking to city leaders, Dr. Nchemba emphasized that taking goods without following legal procedures violates citizens’ rights.

“This practice of seizing goods is unacceptable. Investigate those responsible for taking the items, and if the goods are missing, treat them like any other stolen property. Do not tamper with people’s livelihoods. We cannot fight poverty if we do not respect citizens’ property,” the Prime Minister said.

He further stressed that even when traders make mistakes, cases should be handled according to the law and not by destroying their small-scale goods, as such actions negatively impact vulnerable citizens.

Dr. Nchemba also called on councils to announce nationwide city visits aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by small traders and ensuring proper procedures are followed.

He reminded officials that President Samia Suluhu Hassan is a fair leader, and no government officer should act in ways that undermine her commitment to justice.
