Mbeya City Mayor DorMohamed Issa has handed over 1,222 newly produced desks to 34 primary schools, marking a major step in the city’s initiative to address chronic furniture shortages in public schools.
Issa said the desks form part of a wider consignment of 2,222 desks valued at TZS 100 million, financed through the city’s internal revenue.
Of the total, 1,000 desks were distributed earlier by the City Director to 17 schools during the first phase, bringing the total number of beneficiary schools to 51.
“The city has invested its own resources to ensure pupils learn in a dignified environment,” Mayor Issa said during the handover ceremony.
He noted that the remaining desks were delivered to schools under the second phase, targeting institutions that had been facing the most critical shortages.
The Mayor further stated that the city is continuing to improve infrastructure in the education sector beyond desks.
He highlighted ongoing upgrades to classrooms and sanitation facilities, including the construction and rehabilitation of toilets, to enhance learning conditions across Mbeya.
“We are committed to ensuring every school has the facilities needed for quality education. These improvements are fully funded through internal sources,” he added.
The distribution is part of a broader plan by the city council to strengthen basic education infrastructure and support growing enrolment in public schools.
