NIT records impressive showing as SHIMMUTA games heat up in Morogoro

The National Institute of Transport (NIT) is registering an impressive run at this year’s SHIMMUTA Games, currently underway at various venues across Morogoro, as public institutions, government agencies and private companies battle for top honours.

NIT has fielded a 62-member squad competing in football, netball, volleyball, athletics and traditional games marking one of the institution’s largest delegations in recent years.

NIT Rector, Dr Prosper Mgaya, said the teams have demonstrated strong discipline and consistency since the start of the tournament, with several disciplines already positioning themselves among the top contenders in their respective groups.

“Since we began participating, our teams have performed admirably across football, netball, rope pulling, volleyball and other traditional sports. I am pleased because the athletes have maintained good form throughout the group stages,” Prof. Mgaya.

This year’s turnout marks a significant leap from the 2024 edition held in Tanga, where NIT was represented by only 18 players who took part in football and volleyball.

Sports Coach Sigfrid Msaghaa said the growth in participation reflects a renewed commitment to elevating the institution’s sports profile.

“The increase in the number of athletes has boosted our confidence and competitiveness. Our role is to ensure the institution’s name shines through excellence on the field,” Msaghaa said.

NIT football team captain, Victor Mbezi, said their seven-team group has produced a challenging but motivating contest. By Saturday, NIT had played five matches, securing two wins, two draws and one loss.

“With the results we have so far, our group standings remain favourable. The squad is strong, and we are confident of progressing to the next stage,” Mbezi said.

The SHIMMUTA Games continue throughout the week, with participating institutions eyeing qualification spots as the knockout rounds approach.
