Tanzania’s Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, is in Ethiopia for a key meeting of African Union (AU) Energy Ministers, where countries are working to advance a shared agenda for smarter, more efficient use of energy across the continent.
Ndejembi arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday and was received by Tanzania’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA, Innocent Shiyo.
He is accompanied by the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga.
The two-day conference gathers ministers and technical experts from AU member states to take stock of progress in the energy sector and discuss practical steps for cutting energy losses and improving reliability.
Delegates are reviewing existing strategies, financing gaps, and the technologies needed to support industries, transport systems, public buildings, and households to use energy more wisely.
A major milestone of the meeting will be the launch of the African Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan, a continental roadmap designed to guide countries toward coordinated action.
The plan ties into the broader goals of the African Development Agenda established in 1963, which prioritizes sustainable development and improved living standards for all Africans.
Before the ministerial sessions opened, specialists from across the region took part in a capacity-building programme focused on reducing electricity use in key sectors.
The training is expected to help countries strengthen the technical foundation needed for implementing efficiency-boosting projects at national and regional levels.
The conference is expected to conclude with renewed commitments from African governments to invest in systems that make energy supply more reliable, affordable, and sustainable and to ensure that citizens and businesses alike benefit from stronger, cleaner energy futures.
