PM Mwigulu demands accountability as surprise Hospital visit exposes gaps in patient care

By Our Reporter, Dodoma

Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has ordered sweeping improvements across the country’s health facilities after making an unannounced visit to Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, where he inspected service areas, engaged with staff, and assessed the overall quality of medical care.

During the tour, Dr. Mwigulu underscored the need for hospitals to provide immediate attention to expectant mothers, stressing that delays in maternal services put both mother and child at risk.

“No pregnant woman should be kept waiting at the reception. Maternal care must be prioritized the moment she walks in,” he directed, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting life at every stage of care.

The Prime Minister also instructed the Ministry of Health, the Medical Stores Department (MSD), and all public hospitals to strengthen the availability of essential medicines.

He questioned why some facilities still refer patients to private pharmacies despite significant government investment in medical supplies.

“It is unacceptable for a hospital to complete all diagnostic tests and then lack the medicines required for treatment. Government hospitals must be fully stocked,” Dr. Mwigulu said.

He further ordered hospitals to ensure maternity wards are equipped with basic emergency hygiene supplies such as buckets and basins, noting that such items are essential and should never be missing.

“Pregnancy is not an emergency situation. Hospitals must be prepared with all necessary supplies,” he said.

In addressing financial management, the Prime Minister directed health facilities to strictly use official digital payment systems.

He warned against informal or mixed payment methods, saying they undermine transparency and disrupt proper allocation of public resources.

“Hospitals must adhere to authorized payment channels so that government services remain accountable and efficient,” he stated.

The visit also highlighted the government’s commitment to maintaining and improving healthcare standards, particularly following extensive investments under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration. Dr. Mwigulu reaffirmed that service quality must match the level of resources provided.

“We have equipped hospitals with medicines, devices, and modern systems. Now we expect disciplined service delivery that reflects these investments,” he said.

The Prime Minister ended his visit by stressing that close monitoring of hospitals will continue, and any gap in service delivery or compliance will be addressed swiftly.
