Journalists in Tanzania have been called upon to place greater emphasis on science reporting as a key tool for shaping public understanding, influencing policy, and accelerating sustainable development.
Speaking at the 2025 Excellence in Science Journalism Awards held in Dar es Salaam, Mr. John Kondoro, Chairperson of the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), highlighted the crucial role of science journalism in translating complex research into relatable stories that resonate with the public.
“Science journalism is not just about reporting facts; it’s about connecting science to people’s everyday lives,” Mr. Kondoro said.
“We need journalists who can help the public see how science drives innovation, informs policy, and improves livelihoods.”he added
He praised the award winners for their outstanding efforts in making science accessible and relevant to society.
Mr. Kondoro also encouraged journalists to enhance their understanding of data science and statistics to provide accurate and clear information to the public.
“A strong foundation in data and scientific literacy empowers journalists to tell stories that can shape the future,” he added.
Dr. Amos Nungu, Director General of COSTECH, also stressed the importance of demystifying scientific knowledge and presenting it in ways that are practical and easy to understand.
“Scientific knowledge has no impact if it remains locked in laboratories and academic journals. Journalists play a crucial role in turning research into real-world solutions by translating it for policymakers and everyday citizens,” Dr. Nungu said.
He emphasized that effective science communication is not a luxury but a necessity for informed decision-making and inclusive development.
