The Chairperson of the Minerals Commission, Dr. Janet Lekashingo, has called on Ruvuma Coal Limited to enhance its coal production while considering current market prices, aiming to benefit both the mine and nearby communities.
Speaking during her visit to the mine on September 30, 2025, accompanied by the Tanzanian Citizens’ Engagement Committee in the Mining Sector, Dr. Lekashingo urged the company to adopt modern methods that lower production costs and increase efficiency and profitability.
She stressed that mining operations must comply with laws, regulations, and procedures, highlighting that this ensures safety, peace, and effectiveness in the sector.
Dr. Lekashingo also encouraged experienced mine leaders to share knowledge and train other staff, boosting collaboration and productivity within the mine and across other mining operations in the country.
The Minerals Commission Chairperson emphasized the company’s duty to provide training and employment opportunities to Tanzanians.
She further urged mine officials to control dust near residential areas and schools to protect public health.
She commended the mine’s leadership for their accountability and responsible use of mineral resources for the broader benefit of the nation. “You are key stakeholders because you have been licensed to operate in Tanzania.
It is your responsibility to run profitable operations so that taxes are paid, allowing the government to collect revenue for national development,” she said.
The visit included Minerals Commission officials, among them Commissioners Engineer Theonestina Mwasha and Dr. Theresia Numbi, and Director of Mining Inspection and Trade, CPA Venance Kasiki.
Ruvuma Coal Mine Manager Joseph Robert thanked Dr. Lekashingo for her visit and guidance, which he said will support improved production and community development.
