The government is intensifying efforts to empower fish farmers by providing hands-on training on stocking fish fingerlings in cages and ponds, a move aimed at boosting income, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable aquaculture.

Speaking at the Nanenane Exhibition Grounds in Dodoma on October 28, 2025, during a fish stocking exercise, Dr. Nazael Madalla, Director of the Department of Aquaculture Development at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, said the program is designed to equip stakeholders with modern fish farming techniques.

“The Ministry is committed to promoting practical aquaculture skills. We invite all stakeholders to visit these training sites to learn modern methods of fish farming using cages and ponds,” said Dr. Madalla.

He explained that this initiative is part of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directive that aquaculture extension services and education continue even after the Nanenane exhibitions, ensuring that farmers and stakeholders have continuous access to practical knowledge.

As part of the training, the Ministry has already stocked 1,500 fingerlings in three ponds and one cage. Dr. Madalla expressed hope that more stakeholders will gain hands-on experience in fish farming, strengthening their capacity to earn income and contribute to local food security.

He further highlighted that fish farming is a key pillar of Tanzania’s Blue Economy, offering opportunities to improve livelihoods and drive national development.

This program demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing Tanzanians with practical skills and modern technologies to enhance the productivity and sustainability of the fisheries sector.
