Dar es Salaam residents reap benefits as electricity supply improves

By Our Reporter, Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam residents are experiencing a new level of convenience and opportunity as improvements in electricity supply strengthen daily life and business activities across the city.

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has played a key role in making this possible, a fact acknowledged by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila.

Chalamila visited major electricity projects today, October 16, 2025, including the upgraded Ubungo Substation, the modern Mabibo Substation, and the high-voltage transmission line from Gongolamboto to Mbagala Substation, which together are transforming the city’s power landscape.

“Reliable electricity is no longer a luxury it is essential for our families, schools, and businesses. People can now run shops, study at home, and use modern appliances without interruption. This progress touches the lives of every citizen,” said Chalamila.

At the Ubungo Substation, which now operates with a 300 MVA transformer up from 150 MVA, residents and businesses alike have felt the difference.

Street vendors report longer trading hours, small shops can operate more efficiently, and households enjoy consistent lighting, cooking, and internet connectivity.

The Mabibo Substation project, currently 71.5 percent complete, will expand the city’s electricity capacity even further.

Chalamila urged citizens to take care of electricity infrastructure, emphasizing that protecting these facilities ensures everyone continues to benefit.

TANESCO CEO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, explained that Ubungo Substation receives electricity from both the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and the Kinyerezi Power Plant, providing a reliable power supply that supports homes, businesses, and public services.

Chalamila also noted that reliable electricity is a catalyst for growth, social development, and peace.

“When people have steady power, they can focus on learning, working, and creating opportunities. Every household and business in Dar es Salaam stands to gain from this progress,” he said.

With these improvements, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial hub, is set to become a city where electricity powers opportunity, transforms daily life, and drives prosperity for all residents.
