Ako Tanzania empowers women and strengthens community in Losoito

Ako Tanzania Community Support is driving change in Losoito village, Naisinyai Ward, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, by empowering women, improving healthcare, and enhancing educational opportunities.

Through a vegetable farming nutrition project, local women’s groups are gaining skills and resources to improve family nutrition and generate income, creating long-term benefits for the community.

The NGO has also built three classrooms at Losoito Primary School and completed the village health dispensary, including a modern mother-and-child building and toilets.

These improvements are transforming both learning and healthcare access in the area.

Director of Ako Tanzania, Hilda Kimathi, said the interventions followed a community request. “We first built a classroom for first-grade students, and we are completing two additional classrooms, which will soon be inaugurated,” she explained.

She thanked partners Tansania Hilfe, Ingrid Miertsch, and Hubert through the German organization Aktionskreis Ostafrika e.V. for their support in completing the projects.

Previously, kindergarten children had to sit on the floor, while first- and second-grade students shared a single classroom. The new classrooms now offer a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.

On health, Kimathi emphasized, “We have finished the dispensary construction, but we appeal to the government to deploy a doctor, as the community currently lacks a medical officer.”

Losoito Primary School Headteacher, Loishiye Laizer, praised Ako Tanzania for enhancing school infrastructure and providing teaching materials, including an iPad for kindergarten students.

“Their support has strengthened the government’s efforts to provide quality education,” he said.

Village Chairperson Samson Sakwei said the NGO’s initiatives have created tangible change across the community.

“The women’s nutrition project, school classrooms, and health facilities are transforming Losoito,” he noted.

Resident Tipiliti Kuya added, “Before Ako Tanzania’s intervention, children studied under trees and on bare ground. Now they have proper classrooms and a nurturing environment to learn and grow.”
