Mobile phone service providers in Tanzania have maintained strong service quality while expanding coverage and penetration, according to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).
TCRA Director General, Dr. Jabiri Bakari, said the June 2025 communications sector status report showed all five Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)—Airtel, Halotel, TTCL, Vodacom, and Yas (formerly TIGO)—performing within the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, with only minor variations.
Speaking on September 1, 2025 in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Bakari said TCRA monitored services across 14 regions between April and June 2025, assessing compliance in 17 key areas. “The average performance stood at 92.8 per cent,” he said.
“Reliable and high-quality mobile communication services are vital for Tanzania’s economic growth, as they facilitate business operations, improve access to information, and drive digital innovation,” Dr. Bakari added.
The evaluation covered network availability, failed and disconnected calls, population penetration, and distribution of 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. Other parameters included call handover efficiency, voice quality for users on the move, and mobile data transfer speeds.
The report highlighted Kilimanjaro region as the leader in average mobile data download speeds among the surveyed regions.
“Kilimanjaro’s average download speed was 22.47 megabits per second (Mbps), surpassing the industry average of 19.4 Mbps across 12 regions in Mainland Tanzania and five in Zanzibar,” Dr. Bakari said.
Other average download speeds were: Mtwara (21.57 Mbps), Mwanza (20.81 Mbps), Unguja (20.61 Mbps), Tabora (20.51 Mbps), Mbeya (20.35 Mbps), Singida (20.14 Mbps), Arusha (19.85 Mbps), Songwe (17.71 Mbps), and Pemba and Dodoma (15.85 Mbps each).
Vodacom recorded the highest download speed in Unguja at 27.4 Mbps, while Yas led in Kilimanjaro (27.1 Mbps), Rukwa (25.7 Mbps), Pemba (24.6 Mbps), Mtwara (27.1 Mbps), Mbeya (25.8 Mbps), and Singida (25.0 Mbps).
Dr. Bakari said TCRA will continue monitoring mobile services to ensure quality standards are maintained nationwide.
