The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has sold 1,500 subsidized clean cooking stoves and gas cylinders during the 8th National Mining Technology Exhibition in Geita, a move hailed as a milestone in promoting affordable access to clean energy.
The ten-day exhibition, staged at the Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Grounds in Bombambili from September 18 to 28, was officially closed by Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister, Dr Doto Biteko.
REA used the platform to raise awareness on its rural electrification projects, clean cooking initiatives, and emerging opportunities in the energy sector, including investments in mini-fuel stations.
As part of its drive to promote clean cooking, the agency sold 500 six-kilogram gas cylinders at a 50 percent subsidy, lowering the retail price to TZS17,500. In addition, 1,000 improved stoves, compatible with both regular and alternative charcoal, were offered at an 85 percent subsidy, reducing the price from TZS41,300 to just TZS6,195.
REA officials said the initiative aims to make clean cooking solutions more accessible while reducing pressure on forests and curbing health risks linked to traditional cooking fuels.
Stakeholders at the event praised REA for taking practical steps to ease the transition to clean energy. They noted that the subsidized prices would encourage more households, especially in rural areas, to shift from firewood and traditional charcoal to safer, more efficient alternatives.
The Geita mining exhibition has become a key national platform, bringing together government, private sector and civil society stakeholders to showcase innovation and exchange knowledge in the mining and energy sectors.
