The government has handed over the construction of a modern fish market in Kipumbwi Ward, Pangani District, Tanga Region, to a contractor.

The project, valued at TZS 1.3 billion, is part of the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Program (AFDP) funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Speaking on September 17, 2025, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Mrs. Agness Meena, said the market is a clear example of the government’s commitment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to strengthen the fisheries sector.

She emphasized that the project is designed to improve local livelihoods, grow the economy, and ensure sustainable fisheries.

“The market will provide fishermen with modern facilities to receive, store, and process fish safely, reduce losses, increase product value, and boost income for both citizens and the government,” Mrs. Meena said.

She added that the ministry, in collaboration with Tanga regional leaders, will supervise the project to ensure it is completed on time and meets high-quality standards. The government also plans to invest in more fisheries projects across Pangani and other regions.

Tanga Regional Commissioner, Mrs. Batilda Burian, said the Kipumbwi market is part of CCM’s 2020–2025 election manifesto to improve fish market infrastructure, increase productivity, and raise citizens’ income. She noted that the number of people earning a living from fisheries has grown from 4.5 million in 2020 to over 6 million in 2025.

RC Burian urged the contractor to deliver the project with quality, on time, and with integrity.

Chairman of the Kipumbwi Fishermen and Fish Traders Cooperative, Mr. Said Issa, thanked the government for bringing an international-standard fish market to the community.

He explained that the facility will help fishermen secure better prices and higher profits, directly improving their livelihoods and stimulating the local economy.

“This market will be a game-changer for Kipumbwi residents. It will ensure fair prices and greater earnings, transforming the lives of our fishermen and traders,” Mr. Issa said.
