As Tanzania counts down to World Tourism Day, 800 domestic tourists from the Tanzania Union of Government and Health Employees (TUGHE) visited Kilimanjaro National Park, showcasing the potential of local tourism to boost the economy and create jobs.

During the visit, participants explored the park’s waterfalls, unique highland climate, and rich biodiversity that adorns Mount Kilimanjaro, famously known as the “Roof of Africa.”

Beyond sightseeing, the trip highlighted how domestic tourism can stimulate local businesses, generate revenue, and contribute to national development.

TUGHE Secretary Henry Mkunda said the visit offered members a fresh perspective on tourism’s broader benefits.

“Kilimanjaro’s natural beauty is remarkable, but the experience also reminded us that domestic tourism is a key driver of economic growth and community well-being,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner of TANAPA, Steria Ndaga, praised TUGHE for promoting local tourism and encouraged Tanzanians to explore investment opportunities in conservation.

“National parks are more than leisure spots they are engines of economic development. Visiting and investing in these areas creates jobs, strengthens local businesses, and enhances social progress,” she said.

Jully Bede Lyimo, TANAPA’s Assistant Commissioner for Business Development, urged environmentally friendly tourism.

“Domestic tourism supports government revenue, youth employment, and sustainable practices. Every visit contributes to national prosperity while reducing reliance on foreign tourists,” she noted.

Acting Chief of Kilimanjaro National Park, Senior Conservation Officer Amri Mtekanga, welcomed the visitors and introduced them to the park’s globally recognized attractions.

He highlighted that Kilimanjaro recently won an international award as Africa’s best mountain park and provided guidance for climbing the iconic mountain.

The TUGHE visit demonstrates how domestic tourism can be a tool for economic empowerment, youth engagement, and national growth.

As World Tourism Day approaches, TANAPA urges all Tanzanians to explore national parks, celebrate the country’s natural heritage, and contribute to building a sustainable tourism industry.
