Colonel David Mziray, Manager of Lugalo Golf Club, has urged people from all walks of life to come forward and learn golf, emphasizing that the sport can help develop skilled players who can represent the nation.
Colonel Mziray made the remarks yesterday during the fourth round of the Lina PG Tour, held in honor of the late national women’s team golfer Lina Nkya, at the Gymkhana Grounds in Morogoro.
He noted that golf was once considered an exclusive sport, but recent awareness campaigns and educational initiatives have led to increased participation.
He encouraged anyone interested in learning the sport to visit Lugalo Golf Club for training.
“This sport is for everyone. At Lugalo Golf Club, we have set an example by offering free training. If you can play, we provide a three-month free membership, after which you can officially join our club,” Colonel Mziray said.
He added that the club currently runs a children’s clinic with 72 young golfers receiving training at the club’s expense.
“In addition to training children, our Lugalo Golf Club team is a national selection team under the supervision of the Chief of Defence Forces. Our players have participated in various golf tournaments and performed impressively,” he said.
Caddy Master Chiku Elias also praised the Lina PG Tour for fostering intense competition and promoting golf in Tanzania.
He said the tournament has become an annual event, and though it began recently, it has attracted strong participation.
“We recognize that in the future, the Lina PG Tour will include players from outside the country to increase competition. We call on stakeholders to continue supporting this tournament so it can be held more frequently,” Chiku said.
