Tanzanian businesses and travelers are set to benefit from Air Tanzania Company Limited’s (ATCL) new direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Lagos, a move expected to strengthen trade, investment, and healthcare cooperation between the two countries.
The launch ceremony was held on September 20, 2025, at the Lagos Continental Hotel.
ATCL Managing Director, Engineer Peter Ulanga, said the Lagos route connects the airline to 29 destinations across Tanzania and beyond, marking ATCL’s first hub in West Africa.
“This is more than just a flight route; it is a gateway for business expansion, faster cargo movement, and closer diplomatic ties,” he explained. To celebrate, ATCL offered 100 seats for stakeholders on the inaugural flights.
Tanzania’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Selestine Kakele, highlighted the economic potential.
“Nigeria imports nearly 26% of Tanzania’s cashew nuts after China. Leather and other goods also have growing demand. Direct flights will streamline trade, cut costs, and increase exports,” he said.
Businesses in both countries welcomed the initiative. Engineer Leye Kupoluyi, representing the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted strong interest from over 100 Nigerian companies eager to connect with Tanzanian partners.
Martha Mashiku from UTTAMIS emphasized that the direct flights reduce travel time from over ten hours to just five, enabling faster business engagement.
The healthcare sector is another beneficiary. Dr. Tatizo Waane from the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) said, “Direct flights will allow Nigerian patients quicker access to specialized heart treatments in Tanzania, improving patient outcomes and facilitating medical collaboration.”
The new route signals a milestone in Tanzania-Nigeria relations, offering practical benefits for trade, travel, and healthcare, while positioning ATCL as a key player in regional connectivity.
