Tanzania electoral body calls on media to ensure accurate poll reporting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on media outlets to provide timely and accurate coverage of the 2025 General Election to help promote informed and peaceful participation by the public.

Speaking today during a meeting with editors in Dar es Salaam, INEC Chairperson Justice Jacobs Mwambegele said the media plays a strategic role in delivering credible information and voter education that is essential for the democratic process.

“The media is a key stakeholder. Citizens rely on it for accurate information that shapes how they participate in the election,” Justice Mwambegele said.

He encouraged newsrooms to use their platforms to raise awareness among registered voters and urge them to vote on October 29, 2025, when the general election is scheduled to take place.

Justice Mwambegele also underscored the importance of collaboration between the Commission and the media in ensuring an orderly and law-abiding election.

INEC’s Director of Elections, Kailima Ramadhani, said the success of electoral processes depends significantly on how effectively the media communicates key developments to the public.

“In every country that seeks to conduct credible elections, the media remains central in educating voters and countering misinformation,” he said.

Kailima noted that while INEC is responsible for disseminating information, its outreach would fall short without proactive engagement from the media.

He added that political parties, civil society groups, and voters all depend on journalists to access verified, contextual information that can support democratic participation.

“The media has the potential to be the first line of accountability by identifying and correcting misinformation, whether accidental or intentional about the Commission or the election process,” Kailima said.

He urged media institutions to maintain regular reporting on election-related matters and to highlight the Commission’s activities, timelines, and updates as part of their public service role.

The editors were also reminded to incorporate the official election theme, *“Your Vote, Your Right – Turn Out and Vote”*, into their public messaging to strengthen voter turnout campaigns.
